South Korea’s benchmark rebounded 4.46% intraday on July 21, triggering a buy-side sidecar as foreign and institutional investors turned net buyers after the previous session’s sharp selloff.
South Korea’s KOSPI rebounded sharply on July 21 after entering a technical bear market a day earlier, rising 290.59 points, or 4.46%, to 6,806.86 by 1:10 p.m. as semiconductor heavyweights led gains and buying by foreign and institutional investors returned. The Korea Exchange suspended program buy orders for five minutes from 12:41:29 p.m. after Kospi 200 futures stayed up more than 5% for one minute, triggering a buy-side sidecar. Samsung Electronics rose 7.17% and SK Hynix gained 6.35%, helping lift broader sentiment, while foreign investors were net buyers of 452.1 billion won and institutions bought a net 1.6746 trillion won on the main board. Retail investors were net sellers of 2.0805 trillion won. The move followed a July 20 selloff that pushed the KOSPI into a technical bear market, triggered sell sidecars on both the KOSPI and Kosdaq, and prompted Citigroup to cut South Korean equities to tactical neutral from overweight while maintaining a 10,000 KOSPI target.
