Molicel introduced the INR-21700-P70X at AABC Europe 2026, positioning the cell for next-generation hybrid vehicles as automakers shift focus while battery-electric vehicle growth cools. The company said the PX series cell is designed to bridge lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors, delivering 7000 mAh capacity, 340 Wh/kg energy density and 30C high-rate continuous discharge capability. Molicel tied the launch to a broader market shift toward hybrids. It cited the International Energy Agency (IEA) 2026 outlook as saying manufacturers are actively prioritizing hybrids, while CNBC data showed hybrids neared 20% of new vehicle sales volume in the United States by late 2025 and International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) data put Europe hybrid market share at 24%. In Asia-Pacific, the region accounted for 51.67% of global hybrid vehicle market value across mild, full and plug-in hybrids, and the global hybrid vehicle market was projected to grow from USD 335.21 billion in 2026 to USD 570.78 billion by 2034. The company said the new cell addresses hybrid use cases that require both energy storage and repeated power bursts. It listed a 900W peak power duration of 5 seconds and a power switching time of under 200 microseconds, which it said allows immediate current delivery for overtaking and rapid power absorption during regenerative braking (recovering energy while slowing down). Molicel also said the cell passed UL9540A (thermal runaway fire safety test) and, through single-crystal technology, reduced exothermal heat release by nearly 50% versus conventional poly-crystal materials. In durability testing under what Molicel described as a supercapacitor profile, the PX series retained 96% capacity after 1,000,000 cycles (+10C for 10s / -2C for 110s, cut-off temp. 83°C). Casey Shiue, President of Molicel, said the company is aiming to combine supercapacitor-like responsiveness with lithium-ion energy density to improve hybrid powertrains' power, safety and lifespan.
