A 50-minute service disruption tied to a Kubernetes and Istio misconfiguration paused key workflows across Coinbase’s retail, institutional and developer platforms, though the company said customer funds were never at risk.
Coinbase said a service disruption on July 14, 2026 lasted about 50 minutes and affected transfers, card transactions and onchain services across its retail, institutional and developer platforms. The company said the incident stemmed from an unintended misconfiguration during a routine update to a shared production Kubernetes cluster (container orchestration system), where a resource-name collision altered components tied to an Istio ingress gateway (network traffic entry point). Inbound traffic to the cluster stopped at 12:37 PM ET, pausing internal asynchronous workflows that handle trade settlement, transfers and card authorization. Retail customers could not complete off-platform trades, deposits or withdrawals, Coinbase Card debit transactions were declined, Coinbase DEX swaps on Base and Solana were unavailable, and Exchange, Prime and Developer Platform users saw failed or delayed transfers, settlement, onboarding, fund movement and onramp activity. Coinbase said gateway service was restored at 1:20 PM ET and the incident was mitigated at 1:23 PM ET, with most services catching up shortly afterward and remaining backlogs clearing over the following hours. The company said customer funds were not at risk and outlined safeguards including stronger deployment checks, more resilient tooling and faster break-glass recovery procedures.
