British retail sales volumes increased more than expected in June 2026, with non-store retailers, clothing outlets and seasonal goods demand supported by promotions and warm weather.
UK retail sales volumes rose 1.0% month on month in June 2026, beating market expectations for a 0.3% decline, though easing slightly from a 1.2% increase in May. The gain was driven by stronger non-store retail activity and higher demand for sports merchandise, clothing, outdoor products, fans and air conditioning equipment, as retailers pointed to sales promotions and warm weather. Clothing store sales climbed 1.9%, their biggest monthly increase since September 2025, while other non-food stores also performed strongly, including art galleries. On an annual basis, retail sales increased 4.2%, ahead of expectations for a 2.3% rise and faster than May's 3.5% gain.
