The law firm aims to build custom tools for lawyers with OpenAI, while Sam Altman is reportedly seeking a $1 trillion valuation ahead of a potential listing.
OpenAI has agreed to work with Willkie Farr & Gallagher on AI tools tailored to legal work, marking what the report describes as its largest legal-industry partnership in recent months. The project is intended to combine the law firm’s legal expertise with OpenAI’s technology to support research, drafting and internal knowledge management as firms race to capture institutional knowledge and cut repetitive work. Bloomberg reported that OpenAI legal products leader Jason Boehmig, also the founder of legal technology firm Ironclad, called the effort the most advanced among the company’s legal AI initiatives. Boehmig joined OpenAI earlier this year to help bring lawyer-focused products to market. The agreement comes as OpenAI pushes beyond general-purpose AI into more specialized professional-service applications. It also follows another recent partnership with Visa tied to ChatGPT payments for shopping tasks. The announcement lands as OpenAI is also preparing for a potential Wall Street debut. The company reportedly filed confidentially for a public offering last month, and Chief Executive Sam Altman is said to be targeting a $1 trillion valuation. The article says OpenAI was worth around $852 billion after its latest funding round this year, while some advisers favor a lower valuation if it lists this year and others see 2027 as a better timeline. SoftBank, one of OpenAI’s main investors, has particular interest because part of its investment was funded with a $40 billion bridge loan (short-term financing), due to be repaid in March 2027.
