Operation Commodity targeted an alleged trafficking and laundering network across four states, with authorities citing cryptocurrencies, shell companies, real estate and luxury assets as tools used to hide proceeds.
Brazilian federal police said Operation Commodity targeted an alleged drug trafficking group accused of shipping about 6.5 metric tons of cocaine to Europe since 2021 and using cryptocurrencies alongside shell companies, real estate and luxury assets to help conceal proceeds. Authorities executed 13 preventive detention warrants and 44 search-and-seizure operations across four states, and a federal court ordered the freezing of up to 1 billion reais in bank accounts, real estate and financial assets. Investigators said the network built a logistics chain spanning South America, Europe and Asia, concealed cocaine in coffee, cement and mortar shipments and used chemical compounds to make detection harder. Police also said the group maintained operational and supply-chain partnerships with the First Capital Command and Comando Vermelho. One suspect identified as Rildo dos Reis Cerqueira, known as “R7,” died after allegedly opening fire on officers in Igaratá, São Paulo, while financial forensics and evidence analysis continue with further asset seizures and international extraditions anticipated. The case adds to broader scrutiny of how digital assets can be used alongside conventional channels in money laundering investigations.
