A 26-year-old allegedly used HK$50 million of company funds as margin for a financed position in the CSOP Korea Hynix 2x Long ETF, with losses mounting after a sharp price slump.
A 26-year-old trader in Hong Kong was arrested on suspicion of theft after allegedly misappropriating HK$50 million of company funds as margin for a leveraged position in the CSOP Korea Hynix 2x Long ETF. The trade was built with additional financing between January 9 and July 20, swelling to several hundred million Hong Kong dollars in exposure. After the ETF dropped from a record HK$193.65 in late June to HK$52.58 by July 20, the position showed a paper loss of as much as HK$150 million. The final outcome remains uncertain because the position has not been forcibly liquidated.
