Canadian Vanguard ETFs tracking the renamed Morningstar U.S. Total Market Index have updated fund names, while their investment objectives and the underlying methodologies remain unchanged.
Morningstar said it has completed the rebrand of the CRSP Market Indexes to the Morningstar Market Indexes, folding a benchmark family tied to more than $3 trillion in investor assets more visibly into its global indexes strategy. The company said the change affects naming only, with index methodologies unchanged and no service disruption for clients. The rebrand is now flowing through to fund names. Vanguard Investments Canada Inc. said that effective July 29, 2026, Vanguard U.S. Total Market Index ETF (TSX: VUN) was renamed Vanguard Morningstar U.S. Total Market Index ETF, while Vanguard U.S. Total Market Index ETF (CAD-hedged) (TSX: VUS) became Vanguard Morningstar U.S. Total Market Index ETF (CAD-hedged). The corresponding tracked indexes were also renamed from the CRSP US Total Market Index and CRSP US Total Market Index (CAD-hedged) to the Morningstar US Total Market Index and Morningstar US Total Market Index (CAD-hedged). Vanguard said each fund and its investment objectives remain the same otherwise. The index suite is built on CRSP’s rules-based methodology and serves as benchmarks for mutual funds, ETFs, and index futures contracts. Morningstar highlighted the lineup’s fast-track IPO process, including provisions for mega IPOs with low public float, as a distinguishing feature intended to keep the benchmarks representative as larger private companies list publicly. At the center of the family is the Morningstar US Total Market Index, the firm’s flagship U.S. equity benchmark, which it said captures 100% of the U.S. equity market and underpins widely used products including the Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund (VTSAX) and the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI). Morningstar said the benchmark family supports products from asset managers including Vanguard and, more recently, equity index-based futures contracts launched by CME Group. Amelia Furr, president of Morningstar Indexes, said the rebrand should help expand the benchmarks’ global reach and support new client use cases such as derivatives. Morningstar also said its indexes unit is one of the fastest growing global index providers, citing Burton Taylor International Consulting’s most recent annual index industry report for the highest five-year growth rate in the industry. The company noted that its February 2026 acquisition of CRSP brought the CRSP Market Indexes and CRSP’s Research Data Products into the Morningstar Indexes family, and that the indexes were rebranded in July 2026. Vanguard said Canadians own CAD $196 billion in Vanguard assets, including Canadian and U.S.-domiciled ETFs and Canadian mutual funds, while Vanguard Investments Canada Inc. manages CAD $155 billion in assets as of April 30, 2026.
