The open-source hardware wallet is designed for Ethereum and EVM users, using SPHINCS+ signatures through ERC-4337 smart accounts, with a Bitcoin-focused Toshi PQ1 variant also described.
Freedom Factory has introduced the PQ1, a $179 post-quantum hardware wallet aimed at Ethereum and EVM users, with shipments expected in Q4 2026. The company says the device uses SPHINCS+, a hash-based signature scheme described as resistant to quantum attacks, through an ERC-4337 smart account architecture that lets users access features such as social recovery, gas sponsorship and batched transactions without waiting for Ethereum to change its base protocol. The wallet is fully compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine and is being positioned as an open-source product whose firmware code will be publicly auditable. A July 29 Ethereum Builders Live session is set to feature Freedom Factory CEO Michael Haas discussing the device’s security architecture, its implementation of SPHINCS+ on constrained hardware and the company’s open-source design philosophy. Freedom Factory also filed a trademark for PQ1 on July 6, 2026, before the public launch. Beyond Ethereum, the company has also described a Bitcoin-focused Toshi PQ1 variant that uses ML-DSA-65 for key generation.
