Utah held the top overall spot for a fourth straight year in the 2026 rankings, while Texas led the economy category and Mountain West and Midwest states dominated the upper tier.
Utah remained the top-ranked state in U.S. News & World Report's 2026 Best States rankings for a fourth consecutive year, while Louisiana still finished last overall. The 50-state ranking compares states across eight categories including the economy, education, health care, infrastructure, opportunity, fiscal stability, crime and corrections, and natural environment. Texas rose to No. 1 in the economy category after leading the nation in job growth and posting strong GDP growth, net migration and youth population growth. South Dakota climbed from No. 8 overall to No. 2, and North Dakota advanced from No. 12 to No. 4, reflecting gains in health care, education, fiscal stability and economic performance. Utah placed in the top 10 across five of the eight major categories, including No. 2 in economy and fiscal stability and No. 4 in infrastructure, even as it ranked 48th in natural environment. The top five overall were Utah, South Dakota, Minnesota, North Dakota and Nebraska, with New Hampshire, Idaho, Florida, Washington and Vermont rounding out the top 10. Among the largest states, Florida was the only one to make the top 10 overall, finishing eighth, while California and New York were outside the top 10. U.S. News Executive Chairman and CEO Eric Gertler said the results point to a broader shift in economic momentum toward lower-cost states in the Midwest and South.
