Trump approval falls to 32% in Quinnipiac poll as Iran war weighs

Nate Silver said Thursday that Trump’s approval rating had reached a new second-term low this month, linking the decline to higher gas prices and renewed hostilities in Iran. Decision Desk HQ’s polling average put Trump at 40.6% approval and 57.50% disapproval as of Friday morning. A Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday found 58% of voters disapproved of Trump’s job performance and 32% approved, the lowest approval rating the pollster has recorded for him across both terms. An AP-NORC poll released Wednesday similarly showed 33% approval, down 4 points from its prior survey and the lowest level in its polling since his return to the White House. The political backdrop has been shaped by a prolonged U.S.-Iran conflict that is approaching the six-month mark. The fighting has disrupted the Strait of Hormuz, a key transit route for roughly 20% of global oil supplies, helping push the U.S. average gasoline price to about $4.11 a gallon on Friday morning from roughly $3.15 a year earlier, according to AAA. The new polls also showed broad opposition to the war: Quinnipiac found 60% of voters opposed it and nearly three-quarters opposed deploying U.S. troops to Iran, while AP-NORC found 64% said the war has not been worthwhile.
