Wise links directly to PayNet, adds DuitNow QR and transfers in Malaysia

The July 30 integration gives Wise direct access to Malaysia’s domestic payments rails, enabling in-app QR payments and real-time ringgit recipient verification as rollout expands nationwide over coming weeks.

Summary

Wise has connected directly to Payments Network Malaysia (PayNet), giving the fintech access to Malaysia’s domestic payments infrastructure and allowing it to add DuitNow QR and DuitNow Transfer services for local users. Announced on July 30, the move makes Malaysia the ninth market globally and the fifth in Asia-Pacific where Wise has secured direct access to a domestic payment system. The connection to PayNet’s Real-time Retail Payments Platform, or RPP (instant domestic payments system), removes intermediary layers from the transaction chain, a change that is expected to improve efficiency over time. Through the Wise app, users will be able to scan and pay with DuitNow QR, Malaysia’s national QR payment standard. Wise said the feature is being rolled out progressively and will extend to all DuitNow QR touchpoints nationwide over the coming weeks. PayNet has reported more than 3 million registered DuitNow QR touchpoints across the country. The integration also enables DuitNow Transfer, which allows money to be sent using a recipient’s mobile number or National Registration Identity Card, or NRIC, number. It includes real-time recipient name verification before funds are sent, adding an extra security check. PayNet connects banks, e-wallets and financial institutions in Malaysia, and said it processed 8.44 billion digital payment transactions in 2025. Wise said the same infrastructure will also be available to banks and financial institutions through Wise Platform, its API-based partner service, allowing real-time recipient verification for Malaysian ringgit transfers. Yen Ting Chiam, Wise Malaysia country manager, said direct access to the local payment system and DuitNow QR is part of the company’s effort to make moving money simpler and reduce friction in everyday transactions. Wise has previously identified eight other markets with similar direct access, including Australia, Brazil, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore and the United Kingdom. The launch comes as Malaysia pushes deeper into digital payments, and the entry of a large international fintech into PayNet’s network may increase pressure on traditional banks and local e-wallet providers. For users, the setup should mean faster and more convenient ringgit transactions within the Wise app, while lower intermediary costs could eventually support more competitive MYR transfer pricing. Wise did not disclose a precise timetable for full rollout or any fee changes tied to the new connection.
