Prediction markets dominated tournament-related on-chain activity, with the World Cup far outpacing other major events including the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup generated $20 billion in on-chain prediction market volume from January through the end of the tournament, according to Chainalysis, with nearly 400,000 wallets participating and $5.7 billion traded during the competition itself. The World Cup was the biggest prediction-market event on record by volume, surpassing the $3.6 billion traded during the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election. Chainalysis said markets ranged from straightforward winner bets to novelty outcomes tied to players, highlighting how blockchain-based event contracts have moved further into the mainstream. Other major 2026 events including Super Bowl 60 and March Madness also topped $1 billion. Prediction markets function through derivatives contracts that settle once an event concludes, and market leader Polymarket uses blockchain-based settlement in USDC.
