Newsom and wife earned at least $11 million since 2019, tax returns show

Four years of newly released filings show income from investments, salaries and a home sale, as Gavin Newsom faces scrutiny over his finances while weighing a 2028 presidential bid.

Summary

California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Jennifer Siebel Newsom earned at least $11 million from 2019 through their most recent 2024 tax filings, with annual income generally ranging from about $1.7 million to $2 million apart from a 2021 spike tied to the sale of a Marin County home. More than 700 pages of returns released by the governor’s office showed the couple paid roughly half a million dollars a year in combined federal and state taxes from 2022 through 2024, after paying more than $1 million in 2021 when total income reached $4.2 million. Most of the couple’s income came from winery and restaurant businesses held in a blind trust, alongside the governor’s salary of nearly $200,000 a year. The filings do not identify individual businesses, though the PlumpJack Group, which Newsom owns and which includes wineries and restaurants, is run by his sister and cousin. Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s production company, Girls Club Entertainment, lost money in most years. The disclosure was Newsom’s first tax-return release since 2022 and came as the couple’s finances face heightened attention after he said last month that the U.S. Justice Department had opened investigations into them, which he called politically motivated. The filings also showed annual childcare costs of roughly $14,000 to $44,000 for three of their four children and charitable giving of about $40,000 to $65,000 a year, including donations of clothing, toys and other items.
