Leopold Aschenbrenner has resurfaced with a new $400 million private-company investment days after his AI-focused hedge fund came under intense margin pressure and sold most of its public stock portfolio.
Leopold Aschenbrenner has moved quickly to re-enter dealmaking after his AI-focused hedge fund, Situational Awareness, was pushed to the brink by margin calls tied to leveraged July losses. People familiar with the matter said he completed a $400 million investment in a private company on Tuesday, adding to a $100 million investment that Situational Awareness made in the same company last month. The identity of the portfolio company that received the additional capital was not clear. The new investment is the first sign of how Aschenbrenner is navigating the aftermath of the fund’s near-collapse, which followed demands from multiple Wall Street lenders for additional collateral and forced the sale of most of its public equity portfolio to Citadel. Situational Awareness had grown to about $45 billion after launching in 2024 and had used heavy borrowing to expand bets on AI-related stocks. The fund remained up about 80% for the year, according to a recent investor letter, and also held private stakes in companies including Fluidstack, MatX and Anthropic. The episode has intensified scrutiny of leverage, liquidity management and risk controls in the broader AI investing boom.
