The rand hovered around 16.4 per dollar near its strongest level since July 22, helped by firmer precious-metal prices even as inflation stayed above the SARB target range.
The South African rand traded around 16.4 per US dollar, close to its strongest level since July 22, supported by higher prices for key precious metals including gold and platinum-group metals. Signs of diplomatic progress in the Middle East eased concerns about inflation and further interest-rate increases, helping support risk sentiment. The currency had slumped to a three-month low against the dollar after the South African Reserve Bank unexpectedly left rates unchanged on July 23 while warning about rising inflation risks. Inflation pressures have since remained elevated, with headline inflation rising to a two-year high of 5.0% in June and core inflation accelerating to 4.1%, the highest since September 2024. Both readings stayed above the SARB's 3% plus or minus 1 percentage point target range.
