The Texas energy startup says Watt joined its $1 billion Series D and is saving more than 20% on his power bill after becoming a customer.
Base Power said JJ Watt is investing in the Austin-based company as part of its $1 billion Series D and has also become a customer after switching his Houston home to the service. Watt, a three-time Defensive Player of the Year who has lived in Texas for 15 years, said the company stood out because it is lowering power bills, protecting families and building its system in Texas. Base said Watt is saving over 20% on his power bill, while the startup now powers more than 30,000 homes across Texas and has recently expanded to Illinois. The company builds a distributed network of home batteries that automatically supplies backup power when the grid fails and earns revenue by providing services to the grid, allowing it to offer home backup with relatively low upfront costs. Base, founded in 2023, says its mission is to deliver reliable and affordable power, and it has now become Watt’s first investment in energy after earlier backing sport and consumer brands, including Burnley Football Club and CBS Sports work as a studio analyst.
