Trump to visit California and Nevada to contrast with Democrats on economy, border and crime

President Donald Trump is traveling to California and Nevada this week to sharpen contrasts with Democrats on the economy, border security and crime ahead of November elections that will determine whether Republicans keep control of Congress. He is scheduled to attend a Republican National Committee fundraising dinner on Tuesday at a golf club his family owns in Rancho Palos Verdes in the Los Angeles area, then speak about the economy on Wednesday at Red Rock casino in Las Vegas. The trip comes as Trump has struggled to persuade voters on the economy despite stock market gains and low national unemployment. An AP-NORC poll conducted in late July found that 32% of U.S. adults approved of his handling of the economy, while 69% described the economy as poor. Trump’s overall approval rating stood at 33%. The California stop is expected to renew his clash with Gov. Gavin Newsom, whose relationship with Trump deteriorated after an initially cordial wildfire visit earlier this year. In Nevada, the visit lands in the middle of a competitive governor’s race and broader voter concerns over housing costs, energy demand and federal spending cuts.
