HII expands shipbuilding automation with HD Hyundai pilot and HYPR robotics deals

The U.S. shipbuilder is deploying HD Hyundai’s intelligent welding system at Ingalls Shipbuilding while signing seven-year, performance-based HYPR agreements with Path Robotics and GrayMatter Robotics worth up to $900 million.

HII is widening its automation push across U.S. Navy shipbuilding through two related but separate initiatives: a pilot at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Mississippi that deploys HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ intelligent welding system, and long-term HYPR production agreements with Path Robotics and GrayMatter Robotics that could lead to up to $900 million of shipbuilding work over seven years if milestones are met. Together, the efforts are aimed at extending robotics, physical AI and digital shipyard practices into welding, fabrication, surface preparation, inspection and other production processes across programs including carriers, submarines, destroyers, amphibious ships, future frigates and unmanned surface vessels.
