The Sasolburg study will test how renewable power, battery storage and electrolyser systems could support lower-carbon fuels and chemicals, with findings due later this year to guide possible investment decisions.
Envision Energy said on Aug. 5, 2026 that it is collaborating with Sasol on a design study for a potential green hydrogen system (hydrogen made with renewable electricity) at Sasol's Sasolburg operations in South Africa. The work will assess how renewable power generation, battery energy storage and electrolyser systems (equipment that splits water into hydrogen and oxygen) can be integrated, drawing on Envision's expertise in renewables, storage, green hydrogen and AI-enabled energy management, to optimise output around energy availability, market conditions and operational requirements. The companies said the study could support lower-carbon fuels and chemicals, including potential applications in eMethanol and sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF, lower-emissions jet fuel), and is expected to be completed later this year to provide technical and commercial input for possible future investment decisions. The collaboration was highlighted during a visit by South Africa's Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, to Envision's Chifeng Hydrogen Net Zero Industrial Park in Inner Mongolia as part of the South Africa-China Energy Investment Conference.
