Romania's retail downturn extended to an eleventh straight annual decline in June, with food, non-food and fuel sales all weakening and seasonally adjusted sales falling 1.2% month on month.
Romania's retail sales dropped 7.3% year on year in June 2026, worsening from a downwardly revised 5.1% decline in May and marking the eleventh consecutive month of annual contraction. The June reading was the sharpest annual fall since April 2020, with declines across all major retail categories. Sales of food, beverages and tobacco fell 7.3% after a 4.8% decline in May, non-food sales dropped 6.4% after falling 5.7%, and automotive fuel sold in specialized stores declined 5.8%, deepening from a 3.4% fall. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail sales fell 1.2% in June, reversing a downwardly revised 0.8% increase in the previous month.
