Restaurant Brands' chain reclaimed second place by systemwide U.S. sales after five quarters of domestic same-store growth, while Wendy's extended a run of sales declines and began its own turnaround effort.
Burger King has overtaken Wendy's to become the second-largest burger chain in the U.S. by systemwide sales, reclaiming the position six years after losing it to its rival. The shift follows sharply different recent performances: Burger King reported five straight quarters of domestic same-store sales growth, including an 8.5% increase in the second quarter, while Wendy's posted shrinking U.S. same-store sales for six consecutive quarters, including a 7% decline in its latest quarter. McDonald's remains the clear market leader, holding about 48% of the U.S. burger market in 2024, according to Barclays, compared with 11.4% for Wendy's and 10% for Burger King at that time. Burger King's recovery has been driven by a turnaround launched in late 2022 that focused on food quality, marketing and restaurant remodels. Wendy's, which had climbed to No. 2 after the success of its nationwide breakfast launch, is now pursuing its own turnaround under Bob Wright after leadership changes and pressure from weaker value perception, higher beef costs and softer restaurant spending.
