The change takes effect before Tuesday's open after AvalonBay and Equity Residential won shareholder approval for their merger of equals, leaving Reddit to fill the vacancy while Vivmark Residential keeps index membership.
Reddit will join the S&P 500 before Tuesday's opening bell, replacing AvalonBay Communities after S&P Dow Jones Indices said AvalonBay and fellow index member Equity Residential had won shareholder approval for a merger of equals that will leave the combined company, Vivmark Residential, in the benchmark. The deal could close as soon as Monday, with each AvalonBay share converting into 2.793 Equity Residential units, and Vivmark is due to begin trading on the NYSE under VMRK on Aug. 18. Reddit shares initially jumped nearly 16% after the late-Thursday announcement and were up 10.99% at $175.49 in Friday premarket trading, a move that could be reinforced by passive funds that track the index. The addition follows strong second-quarter results, including 61% revenue growth to $805 million, but investors are still weighing search-traffic pressure from AI-generated answers and the absence of new data-licensing deals in the latest earnings report.
