Lagarde urges for tighter controls on non-EU stablecoin issuers, emphasizing the need for robust reserve backing and equal regulatory measures across jurisdictions to avoid liquidity risks.
ECB President Christine Lagarde has called for enhanced regulation of non-EU stablecoin issuers, stressing that multi-issuance schemes need stronger safeguards to prevent financial instability. She highlighted that current MiCA regulations leave the EU vulnerable to liquidity crises, particularly during market stress, as the euro-backed stablecoin market struggles against USD-dominated stablecoins. Lagarde also pushed for accelerated digital euro development in response to U.S. stablecoin legislation.
