Compass Coffee in Washington, D.C., has become the first global merchant to accept Bitcoin payments through Square terminals, as unveiled during D.C. Fintech Week. The demonstration showcased Square’s Lightning Network integration, allowing Bitcoin payments with instant settlement and optional automatic conversion of up to 50% of daily sales into BTC. Merchants will begin accepting Bitcoin from November 10, 2025, with Block offering zero transaction fees for the first year to encourage adoption. This initiative reinforces Block’s goal of mainstreaming Bitcoin payments across retail environments.
