On Jan. 10, 2026, a cryptocurrency whale lost over $282 million in Litecoin and Bitcoin through a hardware wallet social-engineering scam. The attacker stole 2.05 million LTC and 1,459 BTC, converting much of the loot into Monero, which drove XMR prices higher. The attacker also bridged some stolen Bitcoin via Thorchain to Ethereum, Ripple, and Litecoin networks.
