U.K. lawmakers are pressing for an immediate ban on political crypto donations, citing transparency and money laundering concerns, while industry groups argue tighter KYC checks would be a better alternative.
A U.K. parliamentary committee has continued to press for an immediate moratorium on cryptocurrency donations to political parties, arguing that the practice creates risks for transparency, donor verification, and money laundering. New reporting said some crypto donations in winter 2025 were traceable to overseas IP addresses, adding to concerns that political finance rules may be vulnerable to foreign-linked activity. The committee has already said current systems lack the tools and staffing needed to properly verify donors and trace funds, and has pushed for the ban to remain in place until stronger Electoral Commission guidance and investigatory powers are established. Industry groups, however, said that stronger know-your-customer controls would be preferable to a blanket prohibition.
